How does Value make a drawing seem more realistic?

If you look at an object, in almost any case you will notice how whatever lights in the room affect it a certain way, even a light bouncing off of an object can change how an object is light drastically. Rather than drawing purely with color, and instead drawing with various values, you can replicate that depth in an image.

How did I find the measurements and the angles of your candy boxes and lines?

I used a ruler for some parts of it, but I also scaled the drawing down because originally, there was a big box of Milk Duds, until someone stole it, but to maintain the size, I scaled everything down to match the smaller Milk Duds box. In terms of getting the correct angles, I just eyeballed it, and drew and redrew lines until it was perfect.

Interview Questions

“What was the most difficult part of creating the image, and how did I handle it? ”

The lettering of the Heath bar and the KitKat, most definitely were the most difficult parts of the image, as I had to create the logos, but also maintain the correct perspective and distortion, as well as value.

“What would I have done differently if there had more time, or got to redo it? ”

I would probably try to make it bigger, because the final drawing is pretty small in scale to the really thing. However, I do like how minimalist it appears on the page, so perhaps not.

“What is your favorite thing about what you drew?”

More than anything, I loved creating the cast shadows. Going over and over, making it as dark as possible but still sharp, was probably my favorite part. Cast shadows are always so angular, but at the same time not. They’re most definitely my favorite part about anything that’s a physical object. They’re so beautiful.
